A humidor is not just a box. It is a dynamic system for the proper care of your cigars. A humidor is designed to keep your cigars in optimum condition so that when you smoke them thay are at their peak. Always keep you humidor at a reasonable room temperature and out of direct sunlight. With proper care your humidor should function properly for many years. 1) Unpack your humidor and inspect for tight joints and proper operation of hinges. Open the lid and let it close. There should be a rush of air as you close the lid. This confirms that the humidor will have a good seal. 2) Using distilled water and a clean cloth wipe down the cedar interior of the humidor and any dividers or trays that come with it. Make them wet but do not leave any puddles. Close the humidor for an hour. Repeat this process three times. 3) Put a small glass of distilled water inside the humidor. Close the lid and let sit overnight. 4) Prepare the accompanying humidification unit by adding 50/50 humidifier solution (a mixture of 50% propylene glycol and 50% distilled water) until the unit is filled. Let sit for one hour. Always use this mixture for your humidifier as it promotes the proper 70% humidity required to keep your cigars in optimum condition. 5) Shake out any excess solution so that it does not drip into your humidor. Install the humidifier and the hygrometer (gauge that reads the humidity level) into the humidor. 6) Let stand for six to eight hours and then check the hygrometer reading (digital hygrometers are usually the most accurate). It should be near 70%. 7) Place your cigars in their new home and enjoy. Your humidor should remain at a constant 70% humidity level. Every other week or when the hygrometer reading begins to go down remove the humidifier unit, fill with 50/50 solution, let sit for fifteen minutes, shake out the excess, and reinstall. If your hygrometer always reads low you may want to consider adding an extra humidifier .
